In Spring, the melting snow swells the rivers to create a water adventure playground for canoeing, kayakers and fishing. The alpine meadows erupt into a sea of colour and blooms, which beckons you to pack a picnic basket of local produce, and select the many, many scenic lookouts to laze away the afternoon. Surrounded by the best of Victoria’s alpine vistas, this is the place to be.

And if you're looking for a bottle or two of wine to fill that picnic hamper, a dozen wineries are dotted through our valleys and towns, including those at Myrtleford, Porepunkah, Tawonga, Tawonga South, Eurobin, Gapsted, Rosewhite, Kancoona South and Mongans Bridge in the Kiewa Valley. And be sure to look out for the local Wine & Food Festivals throughout the year - with so much fresh produce on our doorstep, you are sure to find something simply scrumptious!



Spring and early summer is the time when wild flowercarpet the plains heightening already sublime mountain scenery. Bushwalkers can visit historic huts that dot the country-side in the lower parts of the valley along trails with stunning scenery and lookouts. Walks range from short, well-graded tracks that lead to scenic lookouts to challenging overnight hikes for experienced bushwalkers.

Please ensure that you take a precautionary approach, as walking in the area is prone to extremes of weather.



The Australian Alps Walking Track (655 km) crosses the Bogong High Plains Rd about 10 km south of Falls Creek. Or traverse the Bogong High Plains from Mt Beauty by car - a route which climbs through thick forests of alpine ash and snow gums to the rolling country of the High Plains, before it descends towards the historic township of Omeo. For some of the best views of the High Country take a detour along the road near the Rocky Valley Dam up to Mt McKay. At 1849m above sea level, it is the highest spot in Australia accessible by road.

There are many shorter walks in the area which start from different locations. The destinations include Mt Nelse (9 km return), Wallace's Hut (1.5 km return), Cope Hut (1 km return), the Wallace/Cope Hut circuit walk (6 km return), the Wallace Hut/Langfords Gap Circuit (8 km return), Mount Cope (1.5 hours return), Ruined Castle (6 km return), Fitzgerald and Kelly Huts (11 km return), Tawonga Huts, Howmans Gap, and Roper's Lookout (5 km return) which offers excellent views over the Falls Creek village.

The Bogong Plains area is a sea of natural colour in the warmer months. You are able to visit old cattle drovers' huts and relive the history of the men who drove their livestock around the region. The rivers, reservoirs and pondage provide excellent fishing, boating and other water sports.



Covering 646,000ha, the Alpine National Park is the largest park in the state. Linking with national parks in NSW and the ACT, this protected area covers almost all of Australia's alpine environment. The snowfields are the primary winter attraction, with the warmer months revealing stunning wildflower displays.

The park supports a large diversity of animals including a number of threatened species such as the Swainson's Antechinus, broad-toothed rat, and the mountain pygmy possum.

The Park also contains more than 1,100 native plant species, 12 of which, including the bogong daisy-bush and silky daisy are found nowhere else in the world. Snow gums are the most predominant species, and mature alpine ash forests are common. In higher exposed areas the vegetation consists of extensive heathlands, alpine herbfields and grasslands, mossbeds and snowpatch communities.



The High Country lies at the heart of the biggest recreational horse riding area in Australia, and has plenty to offer both the novice and experienced rider. Take in some of Australia's most beautiful alpine scenery - ride with one of the legendary mountain horsemen like Bruce McCormack or Charlie Lovick during a summer muster, visit rustic cattlemen huts on the Bogong High Plains or ride through The Man from Snowy River country around Corryong.

Choose from a range of guided options, from pleasant rides of a couple of hours along quiet bushland trails to three or four-day packhorse tour of eventful days and relaxing evenings spent around the campfire.

Tour operators provide horses, equipment and basic tuition suited to your experience and abilities. All operators are licensed and committed to maintaining high safety standards, and experienced and fully trained staff lead and supervise all trail rides.



Mountain bike excursions are an excellent way to explore beyond the alpine villages, into the heart of the high country. During peak holiday times in summer and over Easter, chairlifts are also available to lift mountain bikers at Falls Creek.

Another area with an excellent reputation for mountain biking is Mount Beauty and the Bogong High Plains. Enjoy a more sedate family bike ride along the gentle Aquaduct trail. Located above the Falls Creek Village and runs from Wishing Well to the Rocky Valley Dam and even beyond if you are more adventurous.

Falls Creek has good beginner abseiling and some limited top rope climbing at Strawberry Saddle. There is also an abseil site below the Howmans Gap Alpine Centre.

Nearby, at Mount Buffalo, the sheer granite face of The Gorge at Mount Buffalo provides a spectacular platform for rock climbing and abseiling. The views are excellent and access is easy as you can drive to most areas.

Experience some of the best granite climbing in Australia with free and aid climbing areas and climbs available to suit everyone from the beginner to the most advanced adventurer at various sites on the Mount Buffalo plateau. The Mount Buffalo Gorge has excellent single and multi-pitch climbing and the North Wall boasts world-class aid climbs. Abseiling sites are easily accessed at The Gorge, as well as other locations on the mountain.

  • Kayaking and Canoes
    Kayaking is one of the most popular forms of water recreation at Falls Creek and gives great options to explore the farther banks and shorelines. Make sure you bring your lifejacket or PFD – there are no lifesaving services outside of summer weekends and the lake becomes deep once you venture out. New in 2021, hire boats, kayaks, paddleboards and more from Rocky Valley Lake foreshore from Peak Adventures. Rentals are supervised by qualified lifesavers and operate weekends from November to April, plus weekdays during peak holiday periods.

  • Fishing
    Rocky Valley Lake is abundant with brown and rainbow trout, and you might get lucky to find a chinook salmon or two. The best fishing is by boat to the middle of the lake, but you can definitely get a nibble or two from the shoreline. Fly fishing is best at the close-by Pretty Valley Lake, found driving or riding Pretty Valley Road toward Mt McKay.

  • Sailing & Motorboats
    Bring the tinny or the dinghy along to launch into Rocky Valley Lake. There are boat loading ramps on either side of the dam wall and ample parking for trailers and cars. Motorboats are allowed to launch but are restricted to 10hp craft only. Hires are available at Peak Adventures.
